What is red kite feeding? Can you visit the red kite feeding centre? Are there feeding stations in the UK? OPEN Saturday – Wednesday 12. The Kites are fed at 3pm. Pre-booked tickets advised. ROADWORKS ALERT – 28th September to 8th October – there will be roadworks on the lane (off the A470) to the farm, but access for visitors will be maintained at all times.


Visitors may sit in the specially built hide only feet away from diving birds and observe them competing naturally for the food provided by the feeding centre at regular times every day of the year. We are very sorry but the kites are not. This is a brilliant opportunity to see these magnificent birds at their best and all credit to the facilitators.

Nowadays, the red kites are fed by the lake every day at 2pm in winter (GMT) and at 3pm in summer (BST). Feeding times are 2pm winter and 3pm summer.


You can watch from the purpose built hide for the best view. It is around minutes drive from both RSPB Scotland’s Mersehead Reserve and the town of Dumfries. Tips for watching the red kite feeding Make sure you arrive in time!


Initially it attracted a dozen or so Kites, now well over 4visit, although the numbers fluctuate between summer and winter. You will find the feeding station on the right hand side.

Although they are capable of taking small live items such as mice and voles, kites mainly rely on carrion – things which are already dead – as their basic food supply. Wild red kites are fed at Gigrin Farm every day of the year.


With breathtaking feats of aerial piracy red kites compete with buzzards and ravens for choice pickings. As soon as the meat has been put out the crow family start emerging from the surrounding trees. Kites watch and wait their chance to furl their wings and dive in, skimming the ground to snatch a scrap before rising suddenly to escape the beaks of the angry crows!


Bad weather attracts greater numbers of birds. It was a bit like being in a warzone, never able to relax and no idea where to look. All in good fun and great practice for birds in flight.
