Kayak tours through Oxford on the River Thames, Englan UK. Oxford Canoe and Kayak Club is situated directly on the Thames, at Donnington Bridge, Oxford. The historic and picturesque town of Oxford is a fantastic location to start a canoe or kayak trip down the River Thames.
Historically, Oxford was an important port on the River Thames, with this section of the river being called the Isis. In the 18th century the Oxford Canal was built to connect Oxford with the Midlands.
The trip starts on a quiet stretch where you can get your kayaking mojo before heading through the centre of Oxford getting a different view of the city and glimpse some of the colleges as you paddle by. Watch out for drunken punters! So why not hire a canoe or kayak and while-away a few hours pottering about on the canal. The Oxford Canal is not just for narrowboats… We’re delighted to say that we’ve been able to help a couple of kayakers recently.
Over the last couple of years Richard and David from Greens Norton have been paddling rivers and canals in the southeast and having fun raising money for their village pocket park. Isis is a small and vibrant canoe club, welcoming both experienced paddlers and beginners looking for a welcoming group to advance their skills with, based on the banks of the River Thames in Oxford. Paddling and rowing are now possible for singles, and doubles from the same households.
Our ongoing work to care for canals and rivers means that many people have the perfect canoeing spot virtually on their doorstep. Kayaking is usually a one person boat with a double ended paddle.
Canoeing is with a single ended paddle in an open boat. Enjoy a fun filled day Kayaking on the river with our Kayak Hire from AV Boats. Despite the club’s name, at the moment we only own kayaks. Just to confuse matters, canoeing is also used as a generic term covering both types of boat.

Our location on the River Thames (Isis) provides us with lots of possibilities for practising your techniques in safe and varied environments. Exploring our canals and rivers by canoe can help you get fit, closer to nature and allows you to experience our waterways from a totally new angle.
To paddle a kayak you place one of the blades in the water at about the same level as your feet (remember legs are stretched out in a kayak ), moving it back as vertically as you can through the water. The key here is a smooth rhythm.
Canoe and Kayak Store is an independently owne specialist paddlesport store based next to the Mbetween Bristol and Gloucester. We have a second store at the Cardiff International White Water Centre in South Wales. Why does my canoe or kayak needs a licence? Our 0miles of canals and rivers need a lot of TLC to keep them in great shape for everyone to use and enjoy - no matter the size of craft.
As well as maintaining things like canal walls or water flow, your licence fee goes towards making sure there are enough easy access points, ramps and slipways for example. Oxford Kayak Hire Kayaks are for people, who MUST be from the same household. The minimum age for participants is years old. All Participants must be able to swim meters unaided and be confident in the water.
The club’s competitive opportunities include white water racing, canoe polo, freestyle kayaking and marathon Kand K taking on Cambridge in an annual varsity and other universities at BUCS. There are Oxford sailing and kayaking to pick from. The club also offers non-competitive outdoor pursuits.
All the sailing and kayaking we list are rated according to the ages they are suitable for, facilities and whether they are suitable for rainy days or best when the sun is shining.
